A woodland birthday with animal stories and quiet discoveries
Bring the woodland indoors for eight children with animal clues, a shared forest story and a notebook they can keep drawing in. Paper leaves and warm green and amber colours are enough to set the scene. The activities work in a living room; a garden is an optional setting rather than a requirement.
A little structure, with room to adapt.
Alternate listening, talking and drawing so guests can join in different ways. Keep the story short and let children pass on a turn. Leave a small drawing space available throughout for anyone who needs a quieter moment.

How to run the activities
1. Who lives here?
Gather: Large pictures or simple drawings of a fox, owl, hedgehog and rabbit.
- Keep one picture hidden and give the clues one at a time. Fox: bushy tail, pointed ears, often active after dark. Owl: feathers, hooked beak, flies quietly.
- For hedgehog use spines, short legs and curling into a ball; for rabbit use long ears, hopping and a short fluffy tail. Accept guesses without scoring.
- Reveal the animal and invite a seated gesture or sound. Guests can choose the next picture for the adult to describe.
2. Pass the forest story
Gather: Four animal pictures and a large sheet to record the story.
- Begin: an owl finds a lantern beside a fallen tree. Ask whether the owl takes it to a fox or a hedgehog.
- Each willing child adds one event or chooses between two suggestions. Write or sketch the choices so the group can follow them.
- After six additions, ask how everyone gets home. Read back the short story; children may change an ending together.
3. My animal adventure notebook
Gather: Eight small notebooks, coloured pencils and paper cover wraps.
- Let each child choose an animal to draw on the first page. A grown-up can write its name or a dictated sentence.
- On the next page draw something the animal discovers. Offer a doorway, a lost hat or a new friend as optional prompts.
- Leave the remaining pages for later. Help children put their name inside the cover and gather their pencil set.
Before the doorbell rings
- Print or draw four clear animal pictures.
- Prepare notebook wraps and folded story sheets.
- Set out pencils and a quiet drawing spot.
- Use paper woodland decorations instead of collected plants.
Keep the cake achievable
A plain cake with green piping and paper animal toppers fits the woodland. Remove the toppers before serving; real mushrooms, moss and foraged plants are decorations to avoid near food.
If plans change
If story turns become too much, give pairs an animal picture and let them draw one scene. The same activities work indoors when a garden plan is rained off.
A little something to take home
Woodland Animal Story Notebook
For eight guests: Eight A6 notebooks, eight sets of six mini coloured pencils, paper wraps, folded story sheets and tape.
- Wrap each notebook with a woodland paper cover and secure it neatly. Cut a band long enough to fit around the notebook and pencil bundle.
- Fold a story sheet down to A6 and tuck it inside. Offer four scenes: meet an animal, find something, meet a friend and get home.
- Bundle the mini pencils beside the notebook with the band. Let children continue the story at home; the whole gift is paper and pencils.
