A space party for a 7-year-old

Give ten guests three different crew jobs: protect a landing capsule, aim supplies at distant planets and carry cargo in a walking relay. This two-hour party needs a table and a clear indoor lane or dry garden. No rocket launches, darkness or loud effects are needed.

A little structure, with room to adapt.

The capsule experiment rewards trying and changing a design. Target tossing is a shorter shared challenge before food, and the relay afterward adds movement. These are generous windows for demonstrations and repeat attempts; nobody has to race to earn a turn.

How to run the activities

1. Cushion the landing capsule

Gather: Five paper cups, five large rolled socks, ten sheets of scrap paper, masking tape and five shallow trays.

  1. Pairs place one rolled sock inside a cup and use two sheets of paper to make a cushion around its base. Tape the cushion to the cup; do not wrap it around a person.
  2. Over a tray, an adult drops each capsule from 20 cm above the table. Watch whether it lands upright and whether the sock stays inside. Everyone stands clear of the tray.
  3. Pairs change one part of the cushion and repeat from the same height. Compare what improved rather than awarding the strongest team a prize; do not increase the drop height.

2. Planet landing challenge

Gather: Three laundry baskets, six soft rolled socks and masking tape.

  1. Set baskets on the floor and mark a throwing line. Keep other guests behind the line and clear glass or breakables from the lane.
  2. Each player tosses three socks toward a planet basket. Move closer or roll the socks if preferred.
  3. Give the whole crew a shared goal of ten successful landings. Everyone retrieves socks together only after throwing stops. Try a new basket position for another round.

3. Mission cargo relay

Gather: Two shallow trays, ten rolled socks, two baskets and two tape markers.

  1. Make two short, separate walking lanes with a basket at the far end. Divide guests into two crews of five; each crew starts with five sock parcels and a tray.
  2. One guest per crew carries a parcel on the tray to the basket, returns and hands over the tray. If it falls, stop and pick it up. Walk throughout; no running or time penalty.
  3. Once both crews deliver all parcels, bring the cargo home in a second round. Offer a shorter route or a seated dispatcher job and celebrate the two crews completing the mission together.

Before the doorbell rings

  • Gather cups, scrap paper, tape and fifteen rolled socks for the experiments and relay.
  • Clear two short walking lanes and a separate tossing area.
  • Test the capsule drop over a tray at table height.
  • Have food ready before the landing challenge ends.

Keep the cake achievable

Use a sheet cake with a blue icing swirl and paper planet toppers. Keep any non-edible glitter or craft materials away from food.

If plans change

In a small room, keep the capsule experiment and roll socks into nearby baskets. Replace the relay with seated cargo passing around a table; the crew still moves each parcel to its destination.
