A unicorn and rainbow party for a 6-year-old
Give ten guests a rainbow party built around music, mystery objects and a silent unicorn story. A few colour cards set the scene without a large craft setup. This 90-minute plan works indoors and leaves room for children who enjoy guessing more than dancing or acting.
A little structure, with room to adapt.
Short musical rounds help the group settle into playing together. A seated mystery game before food changes both the pace and the task. Afterward, a shared acted story gives willing performers a turn while others help by choosing what happens next.

How to run the activities
1. Rainbow freeze dance
Gather: A speaker, a short playlist and three large cards coloured red, blue and yellow.
- Agree one gentle movement for each colour: red means sway, blue means wave arms and yellow means stretch. Show seated versions before playing music.
- Hold up a colour while music plays, then pause the track. Everyone freezes however they are; nobody is out for moving.
- Let volunteers choose colours for the next round. Leave space between guests and finish with a slow track or a water pause.
2. Rainbow mystery bag
Gather: An opaque cloth bag and five large familiar objects: a brush, sponge, cup, rolled sock and wooden spoon.
- Show and name the objects first, then put one inside the bag. Invite one willing guest to feel it without looking; keep the bag below face level.
- The guest describes what they notice, such as soft or curved, and the group guesses together. Reveal the object and compare the clues.
- Rotate objects and volunteers. Anyone who avoids touch can look at the object while an adult gives clues to the others. Do not use food, sharp items or blindfolds.
3. The silent unicorn adventure
Gather: Four hand-drawn scene cards: a sleepy unicorn, a windy hill, a puddle and a rainbow.
- Show the four scenes. An adult acts out waking up as a unicorn without speaking, and the group identifies the scene.
- Volunteers act in pairs while others select the next card and guess. Use gestures on the spot; no jumping furniture or running across the room.
- Put the scenes in an order chosen by the children and act out the whole short story together. Guests can narrate, point to cards or watch instead of performing.
Before the doorbell rings
- Choose a short playlist and make three colour cards.
- Pack five large mystery objects and an opaque bag.
- Draw four simple story cards; artistic detail is unnecessary.
- Clear a dancing area and leave a seated place at its edge.
Keep the cake achievable
Rainbow piping across a simple iced cake gives a clear result. A flat removable unicorn topper is easier to source than an edible standing sculpture.
If plans change
If music is too much, show colour cards silently and let guests copy gentle movements. For a quiet group, tell the unicorn story using the pictures instead of acting it.
