A sports birthday with team challenges for different abilities
Set up a sports party for eight guests around three compact challenges: a walking relay, soft-ball targets and a ground-level course. Blue, orange and green paper signs help everyone find the stations. No particular sport experience is needed, and each challenge has a shorter or seated version.
A little structure, with room to adapt.
Keep turns brief and give everyone a useful role. Water and rest are part of the plan, not rewards for finishing. Mark the play area clearly and stop all throwing before anyone collects equipment.
Times below are minutes after arrival. Adjust them to your guests and your space.
- 0–15Arrival and gentle warm-up
- 15–35Team carry relay
- 35–55Choose-your-distance targets

- 70–100Ground-level course and free retries
- 100–120Cake and pickup
How to run the activities
1. Team carry relay
Gather: Two soft beanbags, four floor markers and two trays or sturdy paper plates.
- Make two short lanes with a turn marker about three metres away. Each team carries a beanbag on a tray, walks to its marker and returns.
- Hand the tray to the next person. A dropped beanbag is simply picked up; compare the team’s second attempt with its first rather than eliminating players.
- Offer a shorter lane, a seated hand-to-hand passing role or the job of counting successful handovers.
2. Choose-your-distance targets
Gather: Three buckets or boxes, six soft beanbags and tape for two throwing lines.
- Put targets at different distances with plenty of clear space behind them. Guests choose the closer or farther line.
- Each person throws three beanbags. Everyone waits until the host calls collect before retrieving them.
- For a team challenge, count how many targets the whole group can reach. Move targets closer whenever a player wants another way to succeed.
3. Make your own course
Gather: Six cones or floor markers, a tape line and two hoops laid flat.
- Build a route with a zigzag walk, a line to follow and two flat hoops to step into. Keep every task at floor level.
- Guests try it once, then suggest one change. Leave a wide bypass beside each task.
- Let pairs choose a smooth route, a funny-walk route or a seated sequence of reaching between markers. No unstable furniture or timed jumping is needed.
Before the doorbell rings
- Check the ground and mark a clear play boundary.
- Use soft equipment and leave a safe collection area.
- Prepare water, shade and a place to rest.
- Plan an indoor version before checking the forecast.
Keep the cake achievable
Choose a plain cake with icing stripes in the three theme colours. A printed sports topper gives the finish without needing a sculpted ball or specialist fondant work.
If plans change
Move indoors to rolled-sock targets and a seated passing relay. Replace the obstacle course with partner mirror movements if floor space is limited.
A little something to take home
All-Stars Activity Card Set
For eight guests: Forty-eight small cards cut from eight A4 sheets, eight A6 kraft envelopes and sticker dots or tape.
- Write one activity on each of six cards: mirror a partner’s movements; act a sport; count soft-object catches; add to a sports story; draw a course; make a sports pose.
- Keep instructions short, allow seated versions and use soft equipment from home for any catching. Stack one set of six cards per guest.
- Slide each set into an envelope and seal it. Add the small sports label to the envelope front or across the flap.
