A cinema-gala birthday for a 12-year-old
Bring the feel of a little cinema premiere to an at-home birthday for eight guests. Red paper, gold stars and a handwritten showing time are enough to set the scene. Start with a popcorn tasting, settle in for one agreed film, then finish with a friendly movie quiz and cake. The published Golden Age Cinema Gala theme is currently available for age 12.

Choose a film with the birthday child before inviting guests and tell families the title and finish time. This example leaves 90 minutes for the film; choose a shorter film or extend the party if yours runs longer. Keep a nearby quiet table available for someone who wants a break without disrupting the screening.

How to run the activities
1. Your living-room premiere
Gather: One family-approved film of 90 minutes or less, a tested screen and speaker, comfortable seats, paper tickets and pencils.
- Test the film and sound before party day. Write the title and start time on a sign, and arrange seats so everyone can see without sitting in a walkway.
- As guests arrive, invite them to add their name or an invented cinema name to a paper ticket. Explain where the bathroom, drinks and break space are.
- Start together and keep the sound comfortable. Let anyone step out quietly; agree a short pause if the whole group needs one.
2. Popcorn tasting table
Gather: Three clearly labeled bowls of popcorn, separate scoops, eight small plates or bowls, water and paper scorecards.
- Choose three familiar flavors after checking dietary needs with families. Put the ingredient information beside each bowl and use a separate scoop for each.
- Invite guests to try small portions of whichever flavors they want. They can circle crunchy, sweet, salty or their own describing word on a simple scorecard.
- Ask which flavor they would put on a cinema menu and why. Leave the bowls available for refills; tasting every flavor or voting is optional.
3. The friendly film quiz
Gather: Six prepared questions about the chosen film, paper and pencils; an adult checks the answers beforehand.
- Write two questions about characters, two about memorable objects or places, and two about events in the film. Avoid questions about tiny details that only a superfan would know.
- After the film and a break, let guests answer together or in pairs. Read each question aloud and allow a pass or a clue.
- Reveal the answers together, then invite each person to name a favorite scene. Keep scores optional and end with applause for the whole cinema audience.
Before the doorbell rings
- Agree the film and its running time with the birthday child, and share the title with families.
- Test playback, sound and seating before anyone arrives.
- Label popcorn ingredients and set out separate scoops, water and napkins.
- Prepare six checked quiz questions, paper tickets and one favor box per guest.
Keep the cake achievable
Use a simple cake with red and gold icing details. Put paper stars around the cake stand or on removable food-safe picks; remove decorative picks before slicing.
If plans change
If playback fails, use the time for drawing an invented movie poster and taking turns describing its story. Keep the popcorn tasting and cake; guests can skip presenting their poster.

For eight guests: Eight food-safe 32 oz kraft cartons, eight cups each of cheddar, caramel and white-cheddar or kettle popcorn, eight labels and sealing tape.
- Keep the popcorn packaging so parents can check ingredients. Use clean separate scoops and place one cup of each flavour in every carton.
- Fold the top closed and seal with a small strip of tape. Add the cinema label to the front at a modest size.
- Include an optional folded screening-notes card outside the food lining. Pack close to the party and follow the popcorn maker’s storage instructions.
