A 90-minute birthday party schedule

Ninety minutes can fit a welcome, two main activities, food and cake without packing every minute. This is a sample for ten children with food prepared before arrival. Choose familiar activities with short setups so adults can spend time with guests.

A little structure, with room to adapt.

The first ten minutes absorb staggered arrivals. Two activities before food avoid repeatedly clearing and resetting the table. The final choice window is deliberately easy to shorten if food or cake takes longer. Pickups stay at the promised end time.

Times below are minutes after arrival. Adjust them to your guests and your space.

How to run the activities

1. Arrival drawing table

Gather: Ten sheets of paper and a shared box of crayons.

  1. Set out a place for each guest before the doorbell rings.
  2. Offer a simple prompt such as “draw your dream party.” Guests can start without waiting for the whole group.
  3. Give a short warning before the first activity and keep the table open as a quiet choice.

2. Cooperative picture hunt

Gather: Ten large picture cards and a matching checklist.

  1. Hide cards in a clearly bounded area at reachable heights.
  2. Work together to locate the pictures and tick them off. Give clues instead of letting the search stall.
  3. Finish by counting the collection and choosing a favourite picture.

3. Paper building challenge

Gather: Recycled card, ten paper sheets and masking tape.

  1. Ask pairs to make a model shelter for an imaginary animal. Adults handle cutting.
  2. Allow ten minutes to build, then a few minutes to look at each other’s work.
  3. If the group is engrossed, use the later choice window to continue instead of interrupting.

Before the doorbell rings

  • Write the pickup time on the invitation.
  • Prepare both activities in separate trays.
  • Have food ready before arrival, subject to appropriate storage.
  • Keep cake items together and choose which activity can be skipped.

Keep the cake achievable

Serve a ready-to-cut cake or cupcakes. Leave time to remove decorations and portion food; do not plan a second game during serving.

If plans change

If you start late, shorten the optional choice window. Keep food, water and a calm goodbye rather than squeezing every activity into the remaining time.
